GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A giant fish captured in Lake Lanier is a reminder of the monster fish that lurk in the depths of Georgia's lakes.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says the prehistoric-looking Longnose Gar caught this month at the northeast Georgia lake is a new state record at more than 30 pounds and nearly 5 feet long.

It was caught in the Chattahoochee River arm of Lake Lanier on Sept. 4 by Gerald Kennedy of Murrayville.

The Longnose gar is considered a surviving relic from a large group of primitive fish. They have long, narrow snouts with many sharp, needle-like teeth.
