FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia medical examiner says a pregnant Fort Stewart soldier suffered blows to the head and struggled violently against handcuffs on her wrists before she died.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation forensic pathologist Dr. James Downs testified Tuesday during a military hearing to determine if the woman's husband, Army Pvt. Isaac Aguigui (AH-gee-gee), should face a court-martial on murder charges. Sgt. Deirdre Aguigui died at their on-base apartment July 17, 2011.

A military autopsy failed to determine a cause of death. Downs testified the after eliminating other causes, he concluded she died from asphyxiation.. He says her injuries show she likely struggled while someone had her in a choke hold.

Isaac Aguigui told police his wife wore handcuffs during rough but consensual sex hours before she died.
