According to Charles Schultz "happiness is a warm puppy," and it will certainly seem that way Saturday morning when the Newton County Humane Society hosts their annual Mutt Show on the square.

Although originally for "mutts," these days all breeds of dog can be seen walking around the green in the middle of the square - all vying for a prize in one of the five categories: most beautiful female, most handsome male, look-alike (pets and their owners), best dressed and best trick. Ribbons will be given in first, second and third place for every category.

Registration begins on Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. and judging starts promptly at 10 a.m. There is no charge for admission, though donations are welcome. All proceeds from the show go to the Human Society to help pay for spaying and neutering of animals as well as for the purchase of items the animals need such as food and veterinary care.

This is traditionally the biggest fundraising event for the Humane Society every year. Last year roughly $410 was raised to help needy animals in Newton County.

Event coordinators expect between 65 and 70 people this year and hope to raise more than last year to help with their cause.

All persons entering must be at least 18-years-old and all dogs must be on leashes. Any breed of dog is welcome, though officials ask that all aggressive dogs be kept at home.
