After missing last week, and writing an article on Drew Parker’s new single “Slow Down Small Town”, it’s good to be back with another edition of The Minute.
I’ll cover some featured shows and entertainment this week, including a new feature at Legion Park, that brings in a pretty big name in music.
Featured Shows:
Mill Street Music Festival at Legion Field, 3138 Mill Street, Covington on Saturday, April 30.
This much anticipated show at Legion Field will be highlighted by headlining act Drivin N Cryin. This Georgia band captured the hearts and minds of many back in the day with tracks like "Honeysuckle Blue" and "Fly Me Courageous." Led by front man Kevin Kenney, Drivin N Cryin has been a mainstay on Atlanta Rock radio and always put on a great show. It's very exciting to have a band of their stature playing here in town. Also featured in the Mill Street Music Festival will be opening acts, including Carly Burruss and local favorite Taylor Marie. Go to millstreetmusicfestival.com for tickets and more information. This should be a big night in Covington.
Chris, Jon and Scott will perform at Sycamore St. Pizzeria, 198 Sycamore Street, Social Circle on Friday, April 29.
I've covered these guys a few times in this space, and I'm happy to cover them again. You can always count on a great mix of tunes and some serious skills. Chris is easily one of the best vocalists in our neck of the woods, singing with such passion. Jon's guitar skills are equally impressive, and I still haven't figured out how Scott can lay down those bass lines like he does. It's such a great mix. The group’s repertoire is so impressive, combining so many genres that everybody in attendance will hear songs that jump out to them.
It's just great. So slide on down to the Circle, eat some good pizza and enjoy what should be a killer show.
Featured Entertainment:
Dinner Theater at The Speakeasy, 2001 Main Street, Porterdale on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
It's another rendition of The Dinner Club brought to you by Kevin and Shant'e Ragin. This edition is "Clueless" — a murder mystery based on the movie Clue. These have become big events down at The Speakeasy, and this one looks to be like a great one. A five-course meal is included, with the fun and mystery of trying to discover who killed Mr. Porterdale.
You can go to dinnerclubshow.com for more information. This looks like a lot of fun.
There's a lot of other music going on this weekend. Search on Facebook or just get out there and find it.
Before I finish up for this week, however, I have to cover one last thing.
It seems like losing great musicians is commonplace in 2016, and this week we lost another. When I think of Prince, the words prodigy, genius and virtuoso all come to mind.
He was an amazing and prolific songwriter basically averaging an album a year. He had so many great songs, and these songs had such profound and important effects on so many people. On top of that, he was an incredible singer. His vocal range was almost unparalleled, but perhaps his crowning achievement was his musicianship — proficient on over two dozen instruments, he was easily one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived.
Truly a supreme talent, Prince will be sorely missed.
