COVINGTON - On Wednesday, Winder-Barrow High handed the second-year Alcovy Tigers their second loss of the season after a 13-2 victory on the diamond.

As the sun began to set and the lights on the field came on, the Tigers (0-2 overall) quickly found themselves down 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning. During that time, Alcovy starting pitcher Michael Aventurato gave up four runs, including two home runs. As a result, the Tigers would be wearing their rally caps throughout the rest of the game.

"They are a great team," said Alcovy head coach Joe Mobley of the Bulldogs (1-0). "We went through three or four sophomore pitchers tonight, and made too many errors. We have to get back to the fundamentals of baseball."

Unable to get any type of offense going, and constantly changing pitcher after pitcher, Alcovy would surrender eight hits, including a grand slam, and two errors, leading to five more runs scored.

It was deep into the bottom of the third inning before Beau Thomas delivered a single down the right field line for Alcovy's first hit of the game. After Ross Roberts was hit in the foot by a pitch, Taylor Jackson singled to load the bases for the Tigers, who were looking to pounce.

Gathering back-to-back walks delivered by the Winder Barrow pitching staff, the Tigers started to slowly claw their way back into the game, cutting the lead, 9-2.

After gaining their confidence on the mound, Alcovy's string of hurlers, including Ellis Fanning, Roberts and Jackson, were able to hold the Bulldogs to just five hits and four runs, while tallying six strikeouts through the remaining four innings of action.

Hoping to generate some kind of reaction out of their offense, the Tigers would sadly end up being disappointed, as they only received three more hits in the game.

Alcovy will visit crosstown rival Eastside at 5:30 p.m. today.
