Verizon Corporation recently donated $5,000 to Newton READS, a local adult literacy and GED counseling program, so the organization can create a mobile computer learning laboratory.
The grant money will go toward the purchase of five laptop computers and literacy software packages. They are being used at five literacy sites currently, including two new sites recently established at Early Hope Baptist Church and Macedonia Baptist Church.
Newton READS Director Janet Hodges said the lab allows the organization to extend its reach in Newton County and serve more residents.
"Our clients enjoy using the computer lab, and we have found the literacy software highly effective when used with the guidance of our volunteer tutors," Hodges said. "We are extremely grateful to Verizon and our local donors for their continuing, generous support of adult literacy in Newton County."
