On Wednesday, Heritage won the Newton-Rockdale Area Cross Country Meet at Alcovy. The event featured six schools, including Alcovy, Eastside, Newton, Rockdale and Salem.

For the boys, Heritage's Shuaib Winters placed first overall with a time of 17 minutes and 51 seconds.

As a team, Newton placed second overall with 45 points. Newton's Travis Knight finished second (18:47). Alcovy finished fourth with 117 points, while Eastside placed fifth with 131.

Top performers for Alcovy were Joshua Holcombe (7th, 19:43) and Chris Hunter (13th, 20:20). Eastside was led by Patrick Ringel (16th, 20:32) and Timmy Guy (19th, 20:42).

For the girls, Megan Drish finished first overall with a mark of 23:13.

As a team, Eastside placed second overall with 75 points. Newton's Amery Armstead finished second (23:19), helping the Lady Rams earn fourth with 103 team points. Alcovy placed sixth with 123 points.

Melissa Bender led the Lady Eagles with a 25:21 mark, finishing 11th overall. Eastside's Sarah Anderson (25:48) and Robyn Estes (25:54) ended 13th and 14th overall, respectively.

Regan Bowers led the Lady Tigers with a time of 24:58 (9th), while Sharonda Hope finished 12th overall (25:42).
