Mrs. Emily Gates Gunn, 71, a live-long resident of Covington, died June 30. The daughter of the late Joseph Marvin Gates and Evelyn Wheeler Gates, she was born in Newton County in 1936. Mrs. Gunn was a member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church and retired from Steele Jones Insurance Agency where she worked as a bookkeeper. She is preceded in death by husband Mr. Thomas "Pete" Gunn, brothers Joseph Marvin Gates Jr. and James Harold Gates and sister and brother-in-law Betty and Jesse Henderson.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Terri and Rick Collins of Kendallville, Ind., Sherri and Steve Helm of Covington, Robin and Joe Maughon of Walnut Grove; grandchildren Ryan and Amy Collins, Buck and Kerri Helm, Jenny Helm, Cody Maughon; great-granddaughters Caroline Collins, Lily Helm; sister Georgia Ann Brooks of Conyers; brother Jack Gates of Dalton; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 2, in the chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Teresa Lilja officiating. Entombment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park.
