Eastside High golf teams retain Newton Cup

COVINGTON - On Monday, the Eastside High golf teams retained the Newton Cup by outplaying crosstown rivals Alcovy and Newton at Indian Creek Golf Club.

For the Eastside boys, who competed using a modified alternate shot, it was their fourth year in a row winning the title, finishing the two-day event with an overall score of 535. Newton followed with a 687, while Alcovy finished third with a 692.

In girls action, it was the second consecutive year for the Lady Eagles, finishing with an overall score of 214. Newton ended second (224), while Alcovy finished with a score of 238.

Taylor Smith and Tate Miller each shot a 74 to lead the Eagles. Eastside's J.T. Blaker and Taylor Lazenby shot a 75, while Ace Cook and Nick Green shot an 82.

Maggie Smith shot a 55 and Illysa Johnson shot a 59 to lead the Lady Eagles.

COVINGTON YMCA

The Covington Family YMCA annual Cheerios Challenge, which includes the 10K/5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run, is Saturday.

The 10K begins at 7:45 a.m., while the 1 Mile Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

Race day registration is $20.

Awards will be given in each standard age group at the end of each race. In addition, there will be a $100 cash prize awarded to the first male and female to break the course record in the 10K and 5K (10K Record M: 31:16; F: 39:27).
