Delivery truck hits phone line, knocks out power

Businesses between Floyd Street and Usher Street on the corner of the Covington Square were without power for several hours Friday after a delivery truck ripped down a parking lot power pole.

The truck was delivering wine and beer to RL's Restaurant when it caught a low hanging telephone line, said Covington Fire Department Captain Rob Christopher. The line caught on the top of the truck, ripping back the truck's roof.

"The truck was ripped open like a tin can," said Utility Director Bill Meecham.

With the wire snagged, the vehicle reportedly continued into the parking lot, ripping the power pole from the ground as it went. The pole flew across the parking lot and smashed into a few cars, Christopher said.

Emergency workers arrived on scene within minutes and the area was cleared.

No one was injured in the accident, Christopher said. The power was turned off for several hours while the pole and power lines were replaced.

Witnesses said the truck delivers to the restaurant every Friday and had previously never had any problems, although complaints had been made about the low wire.

Christopher said the Covington Police Department would determine if charges would be filed against the truck's driver.
