Covington YMCA swimmers win 22 medals

The Covington YMCA swim team had an excellent showing during the District Six Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) championships Saturday in Macon.

Representing Rockdale, the Covington swimmers won eight gold, 10 silver and four bronze individual event medals.

The 11 and 12-year-old boys relay team - Jack Mitchell, Robbie Ellwanger, Joey Ellwanger and Robbie Carstens - won the medley, with Matt Mitchell on the winning free relay.

Drew Ellwanger, Matt Tibbetts and Jack Mitchell each won two individual event gold medals. Ellwanger also won a silver medal, and set a District VI meet record of 27.8 seconds in the 15 to 18-year-old men's 50-yard breaststroke.

Kit King also won a gold and silver medal.

Overall, 14 of the Covington YMCA swimmers qualified for the GRPA state meet July 20-21 in Augusta. All of the swimmers are each looking to record their best times during the state event.
