Commission seeks help for Dixie Boys World Series

The Newton County Recreation Commission is currently seeking advertisers, sponsors and volunteer help for the upcoming 2008 Dixie Boys World Series (13-14 year olds).

This event, which is the largest spectacle of the year, will feature 12 teams competing for the world championship August 1-7 at City Pond Complex.

In addition, the recreation department has 25 other outside tournaments booked for this year.

Advertisements for the souvenir program are due by May 16.

BASEBALL

The Covington travel baseball teams will be competing in the USSSA Qualifier Baseball Tournament called the "Spring Training Bash" this weekend at Criswell Park in Monroe.

The four squads include the Georgia Wrath (9 and under), the Covington Catch (10 and under), the Newton Knights (11 and under) and the Newton County Tigers (12 and under).

GOLF

The Covington/Newton County Chamber of Commerce 14th Annual Golf Tournament will be held April 17 at the Oaks Golf Course.

The cost is $110 per player, or $440 per team. The tournament rain date is set for April 30.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a putting contest, lunch and a silent auction preview. The shotgun start is at noon.

Players will have four drink tickets for beverages. Additional drink tickets can be purchased throughout the tournament. Drinks and snacks will be available on the course.

Heavy hors d'oeuvres and an award ceremony will follow upon tournament completion. Awards will be given to the first, second and third place teams.

There will also be awards given to the Closest to the pin and Putting Contest winners, including door prize drawings.

BASKETBALL

The Eastside High basketball program is currently undergoing a search for all former boys and girls players, including head coaches, assistant coaches, managers, cheerleaders and mascots, to compete in the fall 2008 Alumni Basketball Game.

This is meant to be a special event to kickoff the 2008-09 Eastside basketball season.
