North Gwinnett sits atop poll

North Gwinnett leads the second week of the Georgia Class AAAAAA polls after posting an impressive 35-0 victory over Grayson on the road this past weekend.

North Gwinnett sits 2-0 on the season after opening the year with a 34-14 win over Camden County in the Georgia Dome on Aug. 24.

McEachern and Lowndes both move up in the polls to the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, after Colquitt County fell 24-10 to Hoover (Ala.) this past weekend. Lowndes earned a 42-2 win over Luella last Friday, surrendering only a safety in the 40-point victory.

Coming in at No. 4 in the state rankings this week is North Cobb, which ended the week with a 48-7 win over Starr’s Mill, while Colquitt County rounds out the top-5.

The rest of the state’s top-10 featured the same five programs as last week’s poll, but with some movement in the No. 6-No. 8 range.

Peachtree Ridge leaped over Norcross and Mill Creek in the poll, using a 28-14 win over Parkview to move to 2-0 on the season. The Lions earned an opening week victory over Walton at the Georgia Dome on Aug. 24, slipping past the Raiders 23-17.

Norcross and Mill Creek earned the No. 7 and No. 8 positions in the state poll this week, with Lovejoy (No. 9) and Marietta (No. 10) rounding out the final two spots.

Lovejoy, a Region 2 rival of Newton High and Alcovy, bested Mundy’s Hill in non-region play 41-12 this past Friday. Lovejoy will play the Rams and the Tigers in its final two games of the regular season.

Region AAAA

In the Class AAAA poll, Sandy Creek took the top spot overall. Sandy Creek is current 0-0-1 this season, tying Florida’s Plant High (Tampa) 27-27 on Aug. 29.

Burke County, Carrollton, Marist and Griffin rounded out the top-5 in the poll, earning the No. 2-5 spots, respectively.

In the bottom half of the poll, Eastside’s Region 8 rival Monroe Area placed ninth overall. Monroe Area sits 1-0 on the year after capturing a 48-21 road win last Friday over Loganville.

Statesboro (No. 6), Westside-Macon (No. 7) and Stockbridge (No. 8) finished just above Monroe Area in the polls, with Riverdale rounding out the poll in the final spot.
