According to Georgia Emergency Management Agency officials, besides fires, floods are the most common and pervasive of all the natural disasters.
In preparation for the next event, which some predict is likely considering there have been 30 federally-declared events in Georgia since 1990, a local multi-agency committee has been created to focus on people’s needs during natural disasters. The Long-Term Recovery Committee was formed under FEMA’s guidance and meets monthly. Members include representatives from local governments, the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
"After every disaster, there’s a lesson learned," said GEMA spokesperson Buzz Weiss. "And with this disaster, we learned that with floodplain maps, they change."
