Evelyn Lequeator Gunnells Mask passed away Wednesday, July 9 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers’ Disease. Evelyn was born on December 25, 1935 to Frank, Sr. and Gussie (Grant) Gunnells in Newton County, Georgia, the youngest of six children.
Evelyn graduated from Newton County High School, where she excelled in shorthand and typing. She married her beloved husband, James Clifton (J.C.) Mask in 1956 and they remained lifelong residents and pillars of the Stewart community. Evelyn was an active member of Stewart Baptist Church, serving on various committees and as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
A loving mother and dedicated homemaker, she was known for her cooking, baking, and canning as well as her sewing, crocheting, and quilt-making skills. After her children grew and moved from home she pursued her life-long dream of a career in the medical arts, working for many years as a physical therapy assistant at Social Circle Nursing Home.
She is survived by her daughter, Renee Mask Rice of Watkinsville and son, Randy Mask of Dahlonega; grandchildren Jason (C.J.) Mask of Winter Park, Florida, Eric Mask of Snellville, Anya Rice-Mostyn of Falmouth, England, and Candace Mask Gilbert of Bethlehem; great-granddaughter Caylin Olivia Mask of Winter Park, Florida; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12 at the chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home in Covington at 2 p.m. with Reverend Benson Bottoms officiating. Burial will follow at Stewart Baptist Church. The family will greet friends from to 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral at Wheeler Funeral Home in Covington.
