VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Valdosta Mayor John Fretti has resigned his post, effective Friday.

Fretti, who served for nearly eight years, submitted his resignation on Tuesday.

Fretti entered a guilty plea on Friday in Lowndes County Superior Court to making a false statement related to investigation into his being reimbursed by the city and state for the same trips. He is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday.

Fretti earlier said he would not seek another term in November's election. Two candidates have signed up so far to succeed him.
