ATLANTA (AP) — The NAACP is looking to collect 1,000 firearms during a gun buyback at Turner Field in Atlanta.
Officials say the event Thursday is part of NAACP programs centered on non-violence leading up to Martin Luther King Day.
Atlanta chapter President R.L. White says the organization is looking to get guns off the street and participants can turn them in in exchange for gift cards. Organizers say participants will not be asked for ID if they're looking to turn in a gun.
The event is expected to feature several political and religious leaders along with local police and sheriff's officials and others.
Officials say the event begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Central Avenue.
