STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) — The Stockbridge city council is ordering the mayor to undergo anger management counseling.

Council members tell The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://on-ajc.com/1FDWK2D) that they're alarmed at what they describe as a series of outbursts by Mayor Tim Thompson in recent weeks.

The Atlanta newspaper reports that Thompson could not be reached for comment. The mayor did not immediately return email and phone messages from The Associated Press early Thursday.

Wednesday's reprimand -- which includes the requirement that Thompson seek anger management counseling -- comes nearly two weeks after an explosive exchange between Thompson and councilman Alphonso Thomas.

Thomas said the mayor threatened to beat him up. Thomas filed a police report on the matter, but the mayor faces no charges connected to that confrontation.

Stockbridge is about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta.
