MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Department of Transportation is advertising for bids to complete the four-laning of U.S. 431 from Interstate 85 in Opelika to the Florida line.

The last two-lane stretch goes through Eufaula's historic district and some residents are trying to stop the project.

The department is seeking bids to widen the road to allow two lanes on each side of the median. Department officials recently presented a plan to Eufaula officials. It says only a few feet of additional space will be needed and it will have minimal impact on the area.

Opponents say it will damage the character of the historic district that draws thousands of tourists each year.

State Transportation Director John Cooper plans to discuss the project with Eufaula residents Tuesday night.
