Shootings leave one person dead, another injured

UPDATE:

The Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) has released the name of the victim in the double shooting that happened around 10:30 p.m. at 33 Gum Tree Court on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Divante Simmons of Covington, Georgia. 

The NCSO said in a statement that there had been multiple people outside the home on Gum Tree Court when the shots were fired. Two people, including Simmons, were struck by bullets. The second victim, a 35-year-old man, was wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital. 

According to Sgt. Courtney Morrison of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), the survivor’s condition is unknown at this time.

The NCSO’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Crime Scene Unit collected evidence from the scene all night long and into the morning. Statements from residents inside the home, neighbors and other witnesses were gathered.

The NCSO will release more information as it becomes available.
