Newton County Sheriff's Office 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell is among the top three finalists for the chief of police position in Morrow.

Mitchell, Lithonia Police Chief Kennis Harrell and Atlanta Police Major Christopher Leighty are what's left of the original 38 applicants, according to city manager Jeff Eady.

"I am honored to have been selected as one of the three finalists - humbled even," said Mitchell, who added he was looking forward to the interview.

"That was one of my goals when I went into law enforcement, to be a chief one day. I appreciate everything the former and current Sheriff [Ezell] Brown have done for me and the training I've received. I'm in my 20th year now and if I don't get this position I will continue to serve with diligence just like I have for the last 20 years... Newton County is my law enforcement home."
