The Oaks Course hosts tournament Saturday

The 2007 Oaks Open will be held Saturday and Sunday at the beautiful Oaks Golf Course.

Listed as one of Georgia's Top 100 must-play courses, the Oaks is the ideal location for such a special event.

The tournament is individual stroke play (36 holes), flighted by handicap. (The number of flights is determined by the number of players.)

Each player is required to have a USGA handicap. There will be an open flight with a minimum of two net flights. (Net and gross winners must be within each of the net flights.)

The cost is $175 per person, which includes one practice round, two tournament rounds (cart fee not included), range balls (tournament days only), prizes, golf shoes and tee gifts, breakfast, lunch (Saturday), Calcutta, a shoot out and a skins game (additional cost).

Newton Commission hosts summer sports

The Newton County Recreation Commission is currently accepting registration for its 2007 summer sports.

Online registration for youth football and cheerleading has already started. Walk-in registration is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays at the Newton Recreation Department. (The last day to register is July 21.)

Boys participating in football must be at least seven years old and no older than 12 years old by September 1. The first 375 girls participating in cheerleading must be at least five years old and no older than 12 years old by September 1.

The cost for football is $115 for the first child and $105 for each additional sibling. The cost for cheerleading is $65 for the first child and $55 for each additional sibling.

A cheerleading clinic will be held August 18 at the Newton High School gymnasium. The cost is $7 per cheerleader.

Online registration for fall baseball and softball will begin July 30. Walk-in registration is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 4 and August 11 only at the Newton Recreation Department. (The final day to register is August 11.)

Boys must be at least five years old and no older than 14 as of April 30, 2008. Girls must be at least five years old and no older than 14 as of January 1, 2008.

Registration for the fall adult softball league began Monday and ends August 10.

A deposit per team will be due at the time of registration, and the balance of the registration fee will be due September 4. The fee is based on the number of teams registering.

There is a coaches meeting at 7 p.m. on August 21 at the Stone Road Complex.
