Frederick Harris

Frederick Darnell Harris pleaded guilty in Rockdale Superior Court to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime for his part in a 2007 shoot-out that left one man dead and several injured.

The charges stem from an incident in October of 2007, when Harris, along with his brother Sederca O’Neal Harris and another man, Dexter Martrez Patman, exchanged more than 30 rounds in the parking lot of the Meadow Crossing apartment complex on Milstead Walk.

During the gun fight both Harris and his brother were injured and a bystander, 32-year-old Santiago Eugenio Tiu-Chivalan, a resident of the apartment complex, was killed by a stray bullet as he attempted to leave the area.

The shoot-out was the culmination of an ongoing fight between the Harris brothers and Patman which began toward the beginning of the month with a verbal altercation at a convenience store. The men fought several times after that before shots were exchanged Oct. 26.

Harris was given a 25-year sentence and ordered to serve the first 13 years before being eligible for probation.
