Free food distribution Aug. 30

About 1500 boxes of food were handed out in Rockdale on Monday, Aug. 30, as part of the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program, and more food will be coming in the next several months.

The program, handled locally by the Food Distribution Coalition, also handed out food in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties on Aug. 26 and Aug. 31.

The response on Monday was immediate, and by midday, most of the boxes had been handed out at two of the four distribution locations in Rockdale County.

Michelle McMichael, public relations director for the Food Distribution Coalition, said the response was better than expected and that the program should have had more boxes, but pointed out this distribution period was a trial run for larger distributions in the coming months. Anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 boxes might be handed out in future distributions.

The distribution locations were at the Life Abundantly Christian Center near Iris Drive, the Rock Temple AME Church on Bryant Street, the Extraordinary Life Center on Smyrna Road, and the former Pike's Nursery location on Salem Road.

Recipients were asked to fill out a form stating their household size and monthly/weekly income, but were not required to show proof of income, to receive the boxes.

Life Abundantly Christian Center is looking for volunteers for the next distribution date, on Sept. 28. To find out how to volunteer, call 678-301-8598.
