It was reported last week that unemployment in Newton County was down slightly.

In September, the jobless rate was 9.6 percent; October's figure was 9.5 percent.

Some may scoff that this is not much of a change.

But we choose to look at this news as a positive.

Although the unemployment rate has fluctuated over the past couple of years, we feel that we are slowly starting to pull back from the abyss of economic downturn in this county.

Anytime that we can report a positive increase in numbers of employment or productivity in our county, we will gladly do so.
