Ms. Sally “Sandy” Anne King Pitts, 69, of Conyers, passed away peacefully at her home, June 17. She lived life to the fullest the past two years despite the recurrence of cancer. Ms. Pitts was a faithful member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, where she actively participated with the Daughters of the King and Altar Guild. She also served as a Lector, Vestry member and Lay Eucharist Minister. Recently, in 2012, she completed the Education for Ministry program with The University of the South School of Theology.

She graduated from Newton High in 1962 where she was an All-State basketball player. After graduation, she attended the University of Georgia and obtained her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and master’s degree in mathematics education and was an exceptional high school math teacher at Coosa High School in Floyd County, Newton County High School in Covington, Social Circle High School, and Salem High School in Conyers. Ms. Pitts recently ended her career as a college professor at Athens Tech. She enjoyed teaching throughout her life, was a sought-after tutor and awarded Teacher of the Year during her service at Social Circle High School.

An avid bridge player, Ms. Pitts also enjoyed spending time outdoors, acting in the community theater, volunteering with the GFCW Service Guild of Covington and spoiling her grandchildren and beloved pets. She was loved by her family, respected by her fellow teachers and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Sally (Lambe) King and her husband William Jerry Pitts.

Survivors include her children and their spouses Jennifer and Larry Westerman of Decatur, Jeffrey Pitts and Donna Rewalt of Durham, N.C., Sherry Pitts of Atlanta, Ben Pitts of Athens; grandsons Brennan and Collin Pitts of Durham, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law Barrett and Elizabeth King of St. Mary’s; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara Sue and Thomas Hendrix of Peachtree City and Mrs. Bobby (Myra) Pitts of Monroe; nieces and nephews Lisa Hawkes of Boise, Idaho; Barrett King Jr., of Chesapeake, Va., Sarah King of Boise, Idaho, Michael King of Syracuse, N.Y., Robin Butler of Loganville, David Pitts of Mableton, and Denise Nadeau of Houston, Texas.

A service with Holy Communion will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Edwin Beckham officiating, interment following in the church garden, and a reception following in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 4140 Clark Street, Covington, GA 30014.
