Attorneys for accused murderer Abel Torres announced today that he is competent to stand trial for the 2008 murder of his roommate.

Torres, 32, reportedly killed his roommate, 29-year-old Fernando Gonzalez, and then fled the scene. Two other men who were visiting the home ran and flagged down a passing state trooper and reported that Gonzalez had been killed.

Authorities arrested Torres, who is originally from California, on a Greyhound bus. The bus was stopped in Alabama, but its final destination was California.

Torres had previously been found incompetent to stand trial by doctors at Georgia Regional Hospital. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Newton County Superior Court Judge Horace Johnson Jr. told District Attorney Layla Zon and defense attorney Jennifer Arndt that the Torres case should be tentatively placed on the trial calendar for July 18.
