(October 16, 2009) Rockdale county investigators arrested an Atlanta man in connection with the Oct. 7 fatal shooting at Brandon Glen apartments.

Jokari Jontue Carter, 24, of Atlanta was arrested and charged with murder and giving false statements. Investigators took Carter into custody the evening of Oct. 7. Carter remains in the Rockdale County Jail with no bond.

Deputies were called out to the Brandon Glen apartment complex off Sigman Road because of shots being fired around 4 a.m. Oct. 7, according to a report.

They found Stewart Elvin Tabb, Jr., 30, lying face down in the grass with multiple gunshot wounds and called emergency medical personnel. The victim was taken to Rockdale Medical Center where he later died of his wounds, according to RCSO spokesperson Jodi Shupe.

Tabb, a New York native, had moved to Conyers less than two years ago with his wife and children to find a different life.

“We moved down here for a better life for my kids,” said his wife Joette Tabb, as she paused to wipe her tears. She said they had been married for four years but had known each other for 17 years, since they were kids growing up in the Bronx.

“As a child, it was like the weight of the world was on his shoulders, like a little man,” recalled the victim’s mother, Cheryl Wilson.

When the Tabbs moved to Conyers, Stewart still went up to New York frequently to visit friends and family and wanted his family to be together again. “We worried,” said Wilson, of the trips.

“We thought this would happen in New York, because of all the hustle and bustle,” she said. “Never here, because it’s so peaceful, you know.”

“My husband was deeply loved,” said Joette. “My husband loved his kids, his kids loved him. My husband took care of all the kids in the neighborhood here. It’s sad somebody would tragically take my husband away from us.”

Tabb’s funeral was held at McCalls Funeral Home in the Bronx.
