COVINGTON, Ga. – The Covington Police Department (CPD) arrested a Conyers man for cocaine possession Wednesday after stopping him for being an unlicensed driver.
According to the CPD incident report, shortly after 5 a.m. May 3, Officer Steve Swann conducted a traffic stop on Terence Williams, 33, after encountering him during an earlier incident at Walmart. During the initial encounter, Swann had asked dispatch to check Williams’ name and date of birth. The check reportedly came back indicating that Williams was an unlicensed driver in Georgia.
According to the report, after the encounter, Williams was observed getting into a car and driving away from Walmart on Hwy-142 north toward I-20. Swann activated his emergency equipment and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle just before the I-20 East entrance ramp.
After the stop, Swann reportedly asked dispatch to check the vehicle’s tag. He also asked Williams for his driver’s license and was handed a Missouri license. According to the report, while waiting for information on the Missouri license, the tag on the vehicle, a silver Nissan Sentra, came back registered to a 2006 Ford Fusion.
After asking Williams to exit the vehicle, the vehicle identification number on the Sentra was checked and came back as a 2016 Nissan Sentra registered in Williams’ name. According to the report, the vehicle had an expired registration and no insurance. The vehicle’s windshield also reportedly had a large hole in it. According to the report, Williams’s Missouri license returned suspended and he was placed under arrest.
As Williams was being searched, Swann reportedly discovered a white, plastic bag in his right change pocket. According to the report, Williams told Swann that the bag contained marijuana roaches. As the bag was unfolded, Swann reportedly observed several small rock-like pieces that appeared to be crack cocaine.
According to the report, Williams was arrested and charged with possession of a schedule II-cocaine, driving on a suspended license, no insurance, wrong tag displayed and the windshield violation. He was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center without incident.
