Autumn has finally reached our region, and that makes me very happy. Cool temperatures are now here to match all of this cool music. It's good stuff.
Twisted Tuesday with Amy Rae, Joe Duke and Jonah, performing at Rustic Flair, 5177 Floyd Street, Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m..
It's another round of Twisted Tuesday at the cool little boutique on Floyd Street. Marci Bennett and her super dog Haggard are very excited to be hosting another one of these marvelous events. Per usual, bring your own picnic and supplies and maybe a couple of camping chairs.
This month's edition will feature some folks we've covered a few times — Amy Rae, Joe Duke and Jonah. This crew has been making a name for themselves around town and for good reason — they're really good. This should be a very cool night with very cool folks at a very cool spot.
Sweet Harmony performs at the Mystic Grill Rooftop on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
Sweet Harmony, a group I'm proud to be a part of, will be playing its first show at The Mystic Grill in quite some time. We're all very excited about, and it seems like the Mystic folks are too. This should be a lot of fun.
There really isn't quite anything like playing up on the rooftop. Bands usually set up against the west side of the space so you find yourself with the top of the Historic Covington Courthouse as your backdrop. It's really neat. And the Mystic usually will have several drink and food specials for live music nights. Also, while Sweet Harmony has played several shows this year, I think you have to go all the way back to a January show at Amici as the last time we had all five of us - Rebecca Bates, LeeAnne Blankenship, Johnny Hamby, Ann McCart and yours truly — playing a Sweet Harmony show. It always seems like we've been missing one, so it'll be nice to have the whole gang together.
Brooke Serrano performs at Amici Covington, Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.
Brooke, who we've covered a time or two, is an exceptional talent. This young lady is a wonderful singer and a superb musician and she has such a great mix of covers and originals that she'll play at any given show. And she stays busy, too. She gigs a good bit up in the North Georgia mountains and plays a lot of shows up in the Gwinnett area but usually tries to make it down to Covington at least once a month or so.
And as we've mentioned before, there's just something special about Amici on a Friday night in Covington. It's a combination of the good energy with the live music mixed in with that "Cheers" vibe of being around old friends and family. It's a pretty cool thing. It's that groovy pizza joint on College Avenue; it's the lovely ladies behind the bar; it's the ranch dressing. It's everything.
Odds and ends
"Old School Country" with Federales, Friday, Oct. 14 at The Listening Room at Irish Bred Pub. This Atlanta outfit has been wowing folks all around Atlanta with their killer chops and impressive songbook. You like Hank, Willie, Merle and George? You just might want to stumble up those stairs to the Listening Room.
Chris, Jon and Scott live at The Social House. Friday Oct. 14. 9 p.m. A swap of sorts as the House usually does live music on Saturdays, but for this week at least, one of Covington’s all-star favorites. Chris, John and Scott are bringing their righteous sounds and kicking jams back down to the mill village. It’s always a big event!
"Wrasslin" at The Speakeasy. Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. It's that time — Wrestling in Porterdale. More proof that Newton County is one of the coolest places on earth.
Live music at the Mystic, the Depot, 5 O'clock and the Porterdale Bar and Grill on the weekends. Open mics at the Listening Room on Mondays; The Depot on Tuesdays w/ Shane Clark, and a new one also with Shane hosting - Thursday Open Mics at Pockets Billiards in the Fred's Shopping Center.
