The USSSA World Series was underway this week in Gulfport, Mississippi, and one young group of all-stars got a chance to partake in the fun.

The Newton County All-Star Green 8-year-old and under team made the trip to Mississippi this week to participate in the week-long festivities, that included the World Series games and parades for all teams involved.

The team is coached by David York and Tinsley Bailey, along with Shawn Freeman and Billy Conn. During the Sub-State Championships, the Green All-Stars went 3-2, coming up with three major wins against all-star teams from South Walton, West Walton and Tyrone, Georgia. During their five games, the all-stars scored 78 runs, with their highest game total being 23 against South Walton.

In the World Series, the all-stars faced competition from other southern states, including Mississippi and Louisiana, and got to experience play at a higher level.

“It's another level and better competition,” York said. “I believe it's a gaming and mental benefit that helps our boys reach another level.”

While the coaches and kids alike expected a fun week, winning a few games is also a nice prize, as the all-stars got their first win of the week against Zachary Thunder when they scored 15 runs to their opponent’s 0 after dropping their first two games to the St. Bernard 8 and under Hurricanes and the Clinton All-Stars.

"Through relentless effort, a victorious outcome is reached,” said Tinsley.

Joining the Green team was the Georgia USSSA state champion Newton County Royal All-Star 10 and under team, who kicked off their World Series week with a win against LPR X-Treme from Livingston, Louisiana.

Members of the Green team include: Jonathan Andrews, Adrian Byrd, Griffin Conn, William Cutshall, Sawyer Freeman, Chris Guillory, Chase Jordan, Avery Lazenby, Avery McWhorter, Jonathan Sands and Andrew York.
