Mary Frances Hays Wofford, 102, of Oxford, passed away May 25, 2011. Mrs. Wofford was a resident of Covington for more than 58 years. She retired as Switchboard Operator from International Harvester, in 1976, after 34 years of dedicated service. After her retirement, she began her second career as hostess for Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, where she greeted families with that precious smile, for 27 years. She never met a stranger, and always enjoyed meeting new people. Mrs. Wofford was a member of Covington First United Methodist Church. She was a very active member and past president of the Friendship Sunday School Class, and also served as treasurer of the Liz Waggoner Missionary Circle. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Wofford is loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 8 years, John Wofford, who died tragically in an automobile accident; and her parents, Howard Erwin and Cleo (Patrick) Hays.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Jimmy Williams of Oxford; grandchildren, Emily Smith, Wade Williams, Gordon Williams; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Lightsey, Richard Lightsey, Sarah Anne Williams, Noel Williams, Dovie Williams, Mary Hays Williams, Corey Holloway; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Bertha Elliott of McDonough, Gwendolyn Edwards of Loganville; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Wofford will be held Sunday, May 29, 2011, 2:00 PM, at Covington First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and Rev. Sanford McDonald officiating, and interment following in Social Circle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Saturday, May 28, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to Covington First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street, Covington, GA 30014.
