Mrs. Mary Henry Ellington, 87, a lifelong resident of Newton County, passed away Aug. 9. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ellington taught Sunday School for 70 years, sang with her husband in the church choir for several years, and was a member of the Young at Heart Club at her church. She always enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and was a wonderful cook. She was known for her delicious coconut cakes and cheesecakes. Mrs. Ellington was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents Spence and Emma Kate (Steele) Henry.

Survivors include her husband Howard G. Ellington of Covington; children and their spouses, Brenda and Wayne Edge of Covington, Dennis and Lelia Raines of Conyers, John and Teresa Raines of Covington, Randy and Lynda Ellington of Greenville, S.C., Don and Marcia Ellington of Hoover, Ala., Bob and Karen Ellington of Hazelgreen, Ala.; sisters and brother-in-law, Beverley Hardegree, Elaine and Dr. Michael Pulliam, all of Covington; grandchildren Brent and Amanda Edge, Brandon and Heather Edge, Lori and Jeff Cher, Kingsley Raines, Mandi and Aaron Roberts, Chelsea Raines, Chase Raines, Emma Raines, Mary and Jeff Johnson, Anna and John Broomfield, Leigh Ellington, Sean Ellington, David Ellington; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ellington were held yesterday, Aug. 11, at High Point Baptist Church, in Covington, with Rev. David Marshall, Dr. Jim Martin, and Rev. Tom McElhany officiating, and interment following in the church cemetery.
