A Cousins Middle School student and his mother were killed in a car accident in Jasper County the evening before Thanksgiving. Nigel Griffey, 13, and his 39-year-old mother, Alice Goolsby, were traveling westbound on Post Road in Jasper County in a 1989 Pontiac 6000 when a 1990 Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 16-year-old girl allegedly ran a stop sign and struck the front of the Pontiac. Both vehicles overturned. According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Tom Bailey, mother and son were killed on impact. The teen driver and her 15-year-old passenger were both transported to Walton Medical Center. One had a broken arm, the other a broken leg. The driver was later transported to an Atlanta hospital with swelling to her brain. Both are expected to recover. Charges are likely pending against the driver. "It’s a very sad situation all the way around," said Bailey. Funeral services for Nigel and his mother are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James AME Church on Funderburg Drive in Monticello.
