Updated Thursday night to reflect school closings: 

 

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow in Newton County, effective noon Thursday until midnight Thursday night.

Accumulating snowfall is expected to begin around mid-afternoon on Thursday, and continud through Thursday evening. Total snow accumulation is not expected to exceed two inches.

The NWS also states that snow, sleet or ice on roadways will making driving extremely hazardous, especially by Thursday evening. Be prepared for snow covered roads and patchy ice as rains and melted snow refreeze on roads and sidewalks by Thursday evening. If you must travel, slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.

 

Cold weather has caused some school cancellations in the metro-Atlanta area, and the Newton County School Systems announced late Thursday night that schools would be closed on Friday, Jan. 8. 12-month employees are still to report to work.
