Two more movie projects are looking at sites in Newton County as the area continues to be a hotbed for filming.

A horror movie is looking to film in Newton County's rural southern portion, an area that recently served as a desolate backdrop for the TV series "The Walking Dead", which is playing currently on AMC.

Another project is considering filming in the county's parking deck, located across from the Newton County Administration Building at the corner of Usher and Elm streets.

Tourism Director Clara Deemer said she didn't want to name the projects, because most film productions prefer to avoid attracting large crowds.

She said she gets around two to three calls per week from the state or location scouts looking for shooting sites around the county.

"My main thing is to try to find location sites for them and then put them in touch with the appropriate people locally," Deemer said Friday. "If I fail to find a location, then shame on me, because that's my job."

While Newton County was always a popular filming location, it has increased visibility after it was named a Camera Ready community by the Georgia Department of Economic Development in October. The designation gives the county a more prominent place on the state's website and ensures that it is a top choice for filming projects. Deemer's efforts to help various filming projects directly led to the increased state recognition.
