A 14-year-old boy drowned Thursday in the Alcovy River at Factory Shoals Park, authorities said.

Authorities recovered the body of Brandon Talley after officials with the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the Covington Fire Department and Newton County Fire/Services conducted a two-hour search for the teen.

Investigator Michael Cunningham with the NCSO said the office received a report of a child jumping into the river, going under and never resurfacing just before 4 p.m.

Newton County Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien said crews entered the water with safety vests around 4:35 p.m., but were unable to locate the teen. Because of the recent rains, high water levels forced authorities to leave the river, and the Covington-Newton County Dive Team was called in to continue searching.

Around 6 p.m., O’Brien said, authorities recovered the teen’s body in about 12 to 20 feet of water just off the beach area near the shoals.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis said the case is under investigation, but it appears to have been an accidental drowning.

Davis said officials have talked with the family, and the body will be taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
