Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 19-year-old male who was reportedly found taking weapons from a residence with another male Thursday.
A release from the Sheriff’s Office said William Winston, 19, and Quentin Treadwell, 17, were arrested after they were reportedly found burglarizing a home.
NCSO Sgt. Cortney Morrison said deputies responded sometime after noon to an address on Syracuse Lane near Kirkland Road after receiving a call from a neighbor in the area who said that two black males were in the rear of a neighbor’s residence.
When deputies arrived, Morrison said, they secured the area and when they approached the back of the residence they saw two males come out, carrying weapons and other miscellaneous items.
"The responding deputy walked toward the rear of the residence, at which time he observed a black male inside the residence. The male was holding a bag and dropped it when he saw the deputy. The suspect turned around and began running toward the front of the residence," the release stated.
"The deputy ran to the front of the residence where he observed a black male running from the front yard away from the residence. The deputy repeatedly gave lawful verbal commands for the suspect to stop; however, the male continued to run. A perimeter was set up immediately and one of the suspects, Treadwell, was apprehended without incident not far from the scene."
The report said that later on, investigators were able conduct a more thorough investigation that resulted in the arrest of Winston.
According to the release, the NCSO Criminal Investigation Division was already on the scene to assist with setting the perimeter and apprehending the suspects. The Crime Scene Unit was also called to collect evidence. There was forced entry to the rear entry door.
All items were recovered except for one handgun, the release said.
Treadwell was charged with burglary, second-degree criminal damage to property, criminal interference with government property, and obstruction of officers. Winston was charged with burglary, second- degree criminal damage to property, and obstruction of officers.
"This incident is a wonderful example of the community working together with law enforcement to fight crime in the community," the release said.
"This tip came from a concerned, quick-thinking, watchful neighbor and ended up catching two criminals that were burglarizing a fellow neighbor’s home. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office wants to encourage concerned, watchful neighbors to call and report any suspicious activity."
