COVINGTON, Ga. — The first freeze warning of the fall will be in effect for Newton and surrounding counties Sunday night into Monday morning.

Low temperatures are expected to dip into the lower 30s overnight in Newton County with northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph.

A freeze warning will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday for much of north and middle Georgia, including Atlanta, Athens and Macon. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s to lower 30s across the warning area.

The weather could damage sensitive vegetation. Residents are urged to take steps to protect pets and plants from the cold.

Temperatures should rebound Monday with highs in the upper 50s and sunny conditions. East winds will be around 10 mph. Lows will be around 40 Monday night with light east winds.
