The body found Monday morning at Factory Shoals Park after a report of a missing person has been identified as Ciera Evans, 20, of Covington, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO).

The NCSO received a call Sunday evening about a missing person at Factory Shoals Park. Deputies learned upon arrival that a group of friends went to the river bank to fish and noticed their friend was not behind them when they were getting ready to leave.

Following an overnight search by authorities, the body was recovered this morning in the Alcovy River. The NCSO and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are conducting a joint investigation of the incident, and the body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The NCSO says it is working closely with Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis to obtain the cause and manner of death.
