The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Explorers received second place at the Boy Scouts of America “Winterfest” competition held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee Feb. 11.

This award was received after exceeding specific objectives related to the felony traffic stop scenarios.

“The Explorers worked extremely hard to prepare for this competition and more than deserved this award,” according to a NCSO press release.

NCSO also would like to extend a special thanks to the citizens of Newton County for their thoughtful donations to the program as well as to the deputies and investigators that act as advisors to the Explorers.

The advisors in the program are Cpl. Colin Cunningham, Deputy Joey Salers and Deputy Priscilla Gilbert.
