A man was shot in the head early Saturday morning after reportedly attacking his juvenile step-son.
According to reports from the Covington Police Department, when officers arrived at the disturbance, which took place at Magnolia Heights apartment complex, they found a man and a woman standing outside in the parking lot. The man allegedly had a towel held to his head.
The 29-year-old man reportedly told officers that he had been shot in the back of the head and removed the towel, showing them the entrance wound of a small caliber bullet. The bullet reportedly entered the back of his head, traveled under the skin approximately two-inches before exiting. The victim reportedly told officers that his 16-year-old step-son was the one who had shot him and then ran away.
The juvenile shooter’s 39-year-old mother reportedly told officers that her husband had come home drunk and they began arguing.
After arguing with her, she allegedly told officers that her husband went into her son’s room where the boy was sleeping and began yelling at him.
According to reports, the boy’s step-father pushed a dresser over and the 16-year-old jumped up out of bed and ordered him out of his room. His step-father became enraged, according to the juvenile’s mother and called her son an inappropriate name then reportedly jumped on the boy and began punching him in the face and chest.
The 16-year-old’s mother allegedly intervened at this point and attempted to pull her husband off her child which reportedly caused her husband to turn his temper on her, shoving and grabbing at her in an attempt to pull her from the room. When the boy’s step-father turned around, the 16-year-old allegedly had a gun.
The boy reportedly fired one shot from the gun, which struck his step-father in the back of the head, and then the juvenile ran from the room and out of the residence, according to reports.
His mother called 911 and then both adults ran out in search of the boy but were unable to locate him. They reportedly told officers that the boy had no vehicle and should be on foot.
The boy was eventually located inside the family’s car about four parking spaces away from where officers first met his mother and step-father. He had the seat reclined all the way back, according to reports, in an attempt to hide from the officers. Inside the vehicle with him officers allegedly found a black revolver under the driver’s seat.
The boy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, his step-father was transported to Grady Hospital where he was treated and released.
