Even though the days have been warming up in Newton County, the nights can still be pretty chilly. That's why the Covington Lion's Club will host their 9th annual chili supper fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Lions Club Pavilion at Academy Springs Park.
Adults can enjoy chili with all the "fixin's" for $5 and children can eat for $3. Hotdogs will be available for children as well. Lions will provide desserts for another small donation.
"This is one of our major fundraising projects and it goes toward all our sight and hearing impairment charities," said Doreen Stallworth, Covington Lions board member.
Lions Clubs in Georgia support Georgia Lighthouse Foundation, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind and Dyslexic and Emory Children's Eye Center.
Stallworth said that last year's chili supper raised around $2,200 to be dispersed among the charities the Lions assist.
The chili supper is the Lions second biggest fundraiser next to Sherman's Last Burning Barbecue, generally held on the second Friday and Saturday in October.
"Our focus for Sherman's is different this year," Stallworth said. "All proceeds will go to the Miracle Field in Covington and we're hoping to partner with a couple of other organizations and hopefully get the sponsorship to back our event so it will be really successful and we'll be able to donate a lot of money to that cause."
