A Cousins Middle School student is dead following a car crash in Jasper County.

Nigel Griffey, 13, as well as his mother, 39-year-old Alice Goolsby, were both killed when a car being driven by a 16-year-old female was unable to stop at a stop sign in Monticello. The crash occurred at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, the mother and son were traveling westbound on Post Road when they were hit by a 1990 Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 16-year-old female who was unable to stop for the stop sign at Post Road.

The juvenile female's vehicle hit the passenger side of the 1989 Pontiac 6000, causing both vehicles to overturn, coming to rest upside down.

The juvenile female driver and her passenger, a 15-year-old female, were both taken to Walton Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. Charges are likely pending against the juvenile driver, according to Wright.

According to Sherri Davis-Viniard, Director of Public Relations for the Newton County School System, counselors will be available at Cousins Middle School Monday to speak to students and staff should they need it.
