COVINGTON, Ga. – May marks Older Americans Month throughout the country and there are two ways Newton County will be celebrating this coming week.

There will be a free desert for seniors 60-and-up during Thursday’s Luncheon Concert on the Square, along with a proclamation reading and a pep rally for seniors on Friday, followed by lunch at the Newton County Senior Services Center. The event starts at 12 p.m.

On Thursday, May 4, Newton County Commissioner Ronnie Cowan, on behalf of Chairman Marcello Banes, and Covington Mayor Ronnie Johnston will read proclamations for our older American’s to “Age Out Loud.”

That is the theme of this year’s celebratory month by the Administration for Community Living, promoting Americans 60 and older to take charge, strive for wellness, focus on independence and advocate for themselves.

Newton County’s older Americans will have a chance to Age Out Loud starting Thursday.

The jazz music of Derwin Daniels won’t be the only thing tempting Newton’s seniors to get up and dance, so will the sugar rush from sweet treats provided by local businesses. Irish Bred Pub is donating bread pudding, Bread and Butter Bakery cookies and Scoops ice cream for our seniors to enjoy at no cost.

Friday, members of the Newton County Senior Services will gather on the Square at 10 a.m. for a pep rally, followed by a walk with Banes to Turner Lake Park. This is a yearly tradition in Newton County that sees dozens of our older residents walking and aging out loud.

Anyone 60 and over is welcome to participate and all Newton County residents are encouraged to come out and show their support.
