COVINGTON, Ga. - Sunday, June 4 was National Cancer Survivors Day, which highlights the challenges and strengths of all cancer survivors. Covington resident Mickala Hawkins was extra thankful on Cancer Survivors Day, after receiving her last chemotherapy treatment the week before. Hawkins was diagnosed in March of 2016, immediately began chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Piedmont Newton Hospital and had a double mastectomy. Her positive attitude and strength kept her fighting. "The day I was diagnosed is the day I thought of myself as a survivor," Hawkins said. "I wasn't going to give up." Hawkins has nothing but praise for the staff of the Women’s Diagnostic Center, Dr. Bauer and her cancer navigator, Wendy Hankins. “Wendy is truly a special angel that God put on this earth for us cancer survivors.”
