It’s about that time. The 2015-16 high school basketball season is over, as state champions have been crowned. Now, it’s time to crown some of the top local players of this past season, because of their on-court ability. The Covington News presents you with its 2015-2016 All-County team for both the boys’ and the girls’ basketball team.
First up is the boys’ team. There was a lot of talent in Newton County this year, but it wasn’t that hard to lock down the top five players. Junior JD Notae and Isaiah Miller were probably the top two players in the county, with the young freshman Ashton Hagans coming on strong in the second half of the season. Jaquan Simms is a top scorer and shooter, as is Keondre Perry. These five first-teamers just beat out fringe players like Joshua Cammon and Josh Tukes, but both deserve honorable mentions as their contributions shouldn’t go unrecognized. That goes for Alcovy’s Carnocion Crosby and Eastside’s Raytavious Jackson too.

We’ve saved the best for last. The girls were much easier to pick. Newton’s top three players, Alexcia Chatman, Imani Broadnax and Jurnee Smith, all earned All-Region honors and Alcovy’s Tierra Hodges was Region Player of the Year. Tierra Brown held down the fort on a struggling Eastside team as their leading scorer, but she was an All-Region honorable mention. Destine Smith, Kayla Smith, Quantasia Perry and Tamia Brown were also All-Region honorable mentions and their talents earned them a spot on the All-County list too.
