Teams prepare for busy week

Newton County high schools will have a busy week coming up, featuring 13 total games between the three schools.

Alcovy begins a big athletic week for its volleyball and softball programs, with the volleyball team hosting Rockdale to start off the week's action on Sept. 3 at 5 p.m.

The volleyball program ends its week two days later on Sept. 5, traveling to Luella in region play. The Tigers will play the Lions at 6:15 p.m.

The softball program also hosts Rockdale this week on Sept. 5 before the junior varsity program travels to the Kennesaw Mountain J.V. Tournament on Sept. 6-7.

The Tigers' football program hosts the county's lone home contest this week, welcoming Perry to Sharp Stadium on Sept. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. start. The Tigers dropped a 29-17 decision to the Panthers last season.

Eastside High School will also provide fans with plenty of opportunities this coming week to see its athletic programs, particularly on the diamond.

The Eagles’ softball program will play three games this week, Sept. 3-5.

Eastside will travel to Chestatee and Morgan County on Sept. 3 and Sept. 4, respectively, before hosting Walnut Grove on Sept. 5 in varsity and junior varsity contests beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles’ volleyball program hosts Jackson at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 5 before Eastside closes the week on Sept. 6 on the road in football against Jackson. Eastside toppled Jackson 23-14 at home last season.

Newton High athletics will compete on the road this week, starting off the week at Social Circle for a softball contest. The Rams will play the Redskins in a 5 p.m. match-up.

Newton ends its week on the road against Lowndes in football action. The Rams dropped a 31-0 game to Lowndes last year.

The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Martin Stadium in Valdosta.

Recreation football

Newton County recreation football begins this week with training league and full league scheduled games on Sept. 3-4. Full league schedules can be found online at www.newtonrecreation.com
