In soccer action Tuesday night, the Eastside Eagles and Alcovy Tigers left behind the friendly confines of Sharp Stadium, hitting the road to take on Monroe Area and Ola, respectively.
The Eastside boys team picked up the lone victory of the night, defeating the Purple Hurricanes 4-2, while the Lady Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to Monroe Area in overtime.
The Lady Tigers, who’d lost a combined 20-0 in their last two contests against Ola, scrapped their way to a 4-1 loss.
Eagles rally late
Against Monroe Area, the Eagles fell behind quickly, allowing the Purple Hurricanes a score in the opening five minutes.
Eastside coach Champ Young said after the early score, the Eagles settled down, tying the game up at the 30 minute mark. Neither team scored again before the end of the half, going into the break knotted at 1-1.
In the second half, the Eagles asserted control of the game, trading goals early in the period with the Purple Hurricanes.
With the score tied 2-2, Eastside went ahead on a combination play before adding a game just five minutes later, taking a commanding 4-2 advantage.
With time running out, the Purple Hurricanes fought for a final score, but Eastside kept the score sheet clean in the final 15 minutes of play, sealing the 4-2 victory.
Young said the final few minutes of the game were frenzied, leading to a handful of interruptions.
“The game got very intense down the stretch with a lot of yellow cards and a few stoppages of time to calm the stands and the players down,” he said.
Lady Eagles fall short
In the opening contest, the Lady Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to Monroe Area in overtime, rallying late in the second half to force an extra period.
After a scoreless first half, Monroe Area capitalized on a lax whistle, scoring after a handball went uncalled on the Lady Purple Hurricanes. With Eastside’s defense expecting the call, the Lady Eagles’ halted, but Monroe Area’s attack continued, eventually putting the ball into the net from three yards out with 30 minutes left on the clock.
Eastside’s Morgan Green countered 15 minutes later, scoring after Monroe Area was called for a foul. Green drew the penalty just beyond the left 18-yard line, scoring on the ensuing penalty kick and tying the score.
In overtime, Monroe Area struck two minutes into the extra period, scoring on a 25-yard shot with three minutes remaining in the contest.
Lady Tigers face Ola
Stepping out of region action Tuesday night, the Alcovy girls program took on Ola, falling 4-1 to the Lady Mustangs.
Hebert looked at the game as a warm up to Alcovy's next region contest against Rockdale, using the game as a teaching tool.
"I gave the girls three specific things that I wanted them to work on in preparation for our region game against Rockdale," Hebert said. "The girls did great at those specifics and we ended up getting on the board first. Overall, I was pleased with how the girls played and look forward to building on some of the things we did last night."
Destiny Hardy led off the game's scoring for the Lady Tigers, netting a goal off an Alex Jordan assists in the opening five minutes.
Ola answered Alcovy's early charge, scoring three goals before the break.
After carrying a 3-1 lead into halftime, Ola scored just one goal in the final 40 minutes, but Alcovy was unable to mount a comeback, falling by the three-goal final.
Alcovy finished tied with the Lady Mustangs with 10 shots each, while keeper Victoria Marchant tallied six saves.
