COVINGTON, Ga. — The season isn’t over yet for the Newton Rams boys basketball team, but already, several players are seeing postseason accolades.
Senior forward Dre Butler and junior point guard Ashton Hagans have been selected to play in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association State All-Star Game. Butler, a Tennessee-Chattanogga football signee, will participate in the Senior All-Star Game, while Hagans will play for the Junior All-Star squad.
It could be another visitation opportunity for coaches and recruiters looking to get in on the Ashton Hagans sweepstakes after the 6-foot-4, 5-star prospect decommitted from Georgia this past week. After Newton's 87-81 Elite Eight win over Wheeler Wednesday, Georgetown and Marquette offered Hagans on the spot. No doubt more offers and recruitment of Hagans will follow.
The GACA All-Star games will be played on Saturday March 24 at Dalton High School in Dalton, GA. Rosters are still being finalized as some players will not be able to play due to other events. Last season Newton boys coach Rick Rasmussen coached the Senior All-Stars to a victory.
Newton 2017 graduates Isaiah Miller, J.D. Notae and Darvin Jones were selected to play, but didn’t due to Newton High’s senior prom.
The No. 3 Rams are still pushing for a state championship, though, as the boys are slated to take on No. 2 Norcross Saturday at 4 p.m. at Buford Arena in Buford, GA, in the Class AAAAAAA Final Four round. The Lady Rams also advanced to the state semis, and will Take on McEachern at 2 p.m. at Buford.
